We are delighted to invite you to the 2025 Annual Meeting of The Association of Southern European Economic Theorists (ASSET) which will be held in Rabat, Morocco, from October 30 to November 1, 2025, at UM6P Rabat campus, within the Social Sciences, Economics and Humanities Cluster of Mohammed VI Polytechnic University.

What is ASSET ?

The ASsociation of Southern-European Economic Theorists, is a group of twenty one economics departments and economics research centres located in Cyprus, France, Greece, Israel, Italy, Portugal, Spain, Tunisia and Turkey. The purpose of the association is to encourage cooperation and exchange of researchers and ideas among the participating research institutions in the general field of analytical and quantitative economics and econometrics.

To this end, ASSET organizes various scientific activities, in particular an annual meeting hosted by a different member institution each year. The scientific activities and meetings of ASSET are open to international scholars from all parts of the world.

Since 1986 ASSET organizes an annual meeting, which is an international conference, that currently brings together about 200 researchers. This conference is open to researchers not only from members and other institutions located in Southern Europe and the Mediterranean region, but also from institutions outside this area.

ASSET makes a concerted effort to promote the participation of young researchers from its member institutions in its annual meeting.

Through its annual meetings ASSET is gradually becoming a focal point in southern Europe and the Mediterranean region for scientific exchanges in all areas of economics.

The conference will be held at UM6P Rabat campus, within the Social Sciences, Economics and Humanities Cluster of Mohammed VI Polytechnic University. The Cluster is a teaching and research ecosystem that closely brings together three entities:

  • Faculty of Governance, Economics and Social Sciences (FGSES); offering Bachelor's, Master's, as well as Ph.D. programs.
  • The Africa Institute for Research in Economics and Social Sciences (AIRESS): geared towards research.
  • The Public Policy School (PPS): offering executive education programs for decision-makers in both public and private sectors.

Each of these entities fulfills its mission, using the knowledge and experience shared among a community of professors, researchers, scholars as well as public decision-makers.

Getting to Rabat

Rabat-Salé Airport (RBA)

The closest airport to the city, located approximately 30 minutes away. Taxis and bus line AE are available outside the arrivals’ terminal, with fares displayed in the airport hall and taxi parking area.

Casablanca Mohammed V International Airport (CMN)

The airport is 1.5 hours away from Rabat, it offers direct trains to the city departing every hour. Train tickets can be purchased online via the ONCF website or directly at the station, with a trip cost of 100 MAD.

Tangier Ibn Battouta Airport (TNG)

Located 3 hours from Rabat, the most convenient option is to head to Tangier’s train station and take the high-speed (TGV) train to Rabat.

Getting to the campus

First time visiting

To get to the campus from Rabat, you can use:

  • Public transportation: Take tramway Line 2 (L2) to its Sale Terminus (6 MAD), then transfer to bus line 201, which stops in front of the campus. The total bus ride (5 MAD) takes approximately 25 minutes, Small taxis are also an option, but the meter is unlikely to be used as the campus is outside the city. Be sure to negotiate the fare in advance, with 100 MAD as the maximum.
  • Ride-hailing apps: A ride between UM6P Campus and downtown costs approximately 50 MAD.
  • On-campus accommodation: If you are staying at our campus hotel, the venue is within walking distance.

Conference days

A shuttle service will be available during the conference to transport participants from a designated hotel (Name TBD) in Rabat to the campus and back.

University of Alicante, Spain

Han Bleichrodt is Full Professor of Economics at the University of Alicante, Spain. Before he was Full Professor at Erasmus University in Rotterdam, the Netherlands and the Australian National University in Canberra, Australia. His main areas of research are behavioral economics and health economics, in particular decision under risk and ambiguity, intertemporal choice and the measurement of quality of life. He has published more than 100 articles in peer reviewed journals like Econometrica, American Economic Review, Management Science, Journal of Economic Theory, Review of Economics and Statistics, and the Journal of Health Economics. He has served on the boards of various journals and was the department editor of Decision Analysis at Management Science from 2014-2018. In 2025 his textbook on Behavioral Economics will appear. Han holds a PhD from Erasmus University Rotterdam and MScs from Erasmus University and the University of York.

Brown University, USA

Andrew Foster is the George and Nancy Parker Professor of Economics at Brown University. He is an empirical microeconomist with primary interests in economic development, population and the environment. Recent projects focus on the role of scale economies in agriculture, the impact of ex ante risk on schooling choice, the effect of interhousehold sorting on educational mobility, and the consequences of environmental spillovers in agriculture. He also has work on income-segregation and on long-term care in the US. He serves as the Editor in Chief of the Journal of Development Economics and is the Associate Director of Brown's Population Studies and Training Center.

Louis-André Gérard-Varet Prize

This prize is in memory of ASSET’s first elected president Louis-André Gérard-Varet, who passed away in January 2001. Louis-Andre Gerard-Varet was Directeur d’Etudes at EHESS, and Director of GREQAM in Marseille. He was ASSET’s chairman from 1990 to 1997 and its president from 1997 to 1999.

ASSET awards the Louis-André Gérard-Varet Prize each year to a young author (either a current graduate student or a recent PhD within two years of graduation) of an outstanding paper singled out by the program committee among those submitted to the ASSET annual meeting. The recipient of the prize must be attending the annual meeting, and in the case of co-authored papers, all authors must be individually eligible.

The short-list of candidates will be announced prior to the conference start.

The winner of the prize will be announced during the Conference dinner.

Conference Program

Welcoming Reception

A reception will be held on the first day of the conference at the event venue to welcome participants. This will be a great opportunity for attendees to connect with one another in a convivial setting.

Conference Dinner

An off-campus dinner will be hosted in one of Rabat emblematic restaurants, offering participants the chance to gather in a relaxed atmosphere. The Faculty will arrange transportation from the campus to the restaurant and back to the hotels.

Rabat Activity

As part of the event, FGSES will host a guided tour of Chellah, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This archaeological site offers a unique journey through Morocco’s history, showcasing the evolution of civilizations over the centuries.
