The Africa Institute for Research in Economics and Social Sciences (AIRESS) hosted a seminar titled "Debts in/of Displacement." The seminar was conducted by Mike Collyer, Professor of Geography at the Sussex Centre for Migration Research.
During the presentation, Professor Collyer explored how forcibly displaced people have reduced access to financial credit compared to non-displaced groups. This disparity is particularly significant among low- or no-income populations, for whom debt often becomes a central part of livelihood strategies.
His insights invite a rethinking of how debt is viewed in the context of humanitarian response and economic resilience.
