Webinar: Global South Reflections on a Routes-Based Approach to Migration

The International Development Research Centre (IDRC), in partnership with the Engagement Refugee Research Network (LERRN) at Carleton University, is organizing a webinar on "Global South Perspectives on Climate Change and Displacement" on Wednesday, December 11th at 9:00 a.m. (EST) via Zoom.

Our guest speakers for this event are:

  • Madeline Garlick, Chief of the Protection Policy and Legal Advice Section in the Division of International Protection at UNHCR in Geneva
  • Dr. Matthew Bird, as the IDRC Research Chair for Peru
  • Dr. Myriam Cherti, as the IDRC Research Chair for Morocco

Madeline Garlick, Chief of the Protection Policy and Legal Advice Section at UNHCR, will present UNHCR’s perspective on a routes-based approach to migration—a potential paradigm shift in humanitarian response that emphasizes integrated protection programming across migration routes, rather than siloed, country-specific approaches. Dr. Matthew Bird, IDRC Research Chair for Peru, and Dr. Myriam Cherti, IDRC Research Chair for Morocco, will offer regional reflections from the Americas and North Africa, discussing both the opportunities and challenges of this approach from a Global South perspective. The panel will explore how this model addresses the complexities of mixed movements, the evolving legal status of migrants along routes, and the importance of connecting humanitarian and development agendas. The event will also highlight the critical role of localized evidence and research partnerships in shaping effective, context-specific migration policies.
