Instructions for presenters
Chairing
Each standard session's chair is the last participant presenting in that session (or the thematic session organizer). This will ensure that all participants are on time and sessions do not extend beyond their time slot. Note that due to some cancellations, not all sessions are fully booked, so there may be more time for Q&A after all presentations are made. Please keep on time to allow attendees to easily navigate from one session to another.
Talks
Standard talks are allocated 15 minutes plus 5 minutes for questions. We advise participants to plan for a 15-minute talk. Lightning talks are 5 minutes. Please make sure to send your presentation (in .ppt, .pptx, or .pdf; rooms are equipped with computers that are not Mac compatible) before your session to the session's room email (the list will be provided in a separate email later). Our volunteers will be able to download your presentation and have it ready for your talk. Rooms and their email addresses will be communicated shortly in a separate email.
Poster session
The poster session is scheduled as the last activity on May 14th, in parallel with refreshments. Posters should be A0 size (landscape orientation). You can have your poster printed in Rabat at ILEF, located near the Medina, website: https://www.ilef.ma/ and emails: [email protected] and [email protected]; or at RB Event & Communication, located in the Agdal neighbourhood, email: [email protected]

Conference Awards
The Human Behavior and Evolution Society also recognizes scholarly contributions during the annual conference. The HBES Conference Awards include the Post-Doctoral Award, the New Investigator Award, and the Best Poster Award.
One is eligible for the Post-Doctoral Award up to five years post-Ph.D. One is eligible for the New Investigator Award if they were a graduate student at the time of the work (see below).
Additionally, to be eligible for the New Investigator Award or the Post-Doctoral Award, individuals must submit a manuscript corresponding with the abstract they have submitted for a talk. Your manuscript can have co-authors, but you must be the first author on the manuscript, and the manuscript must predominantly describe your own work. Note that the manuscript can be "in prep" (e.g., a pre-print), under review, or accepted for publication.
All posters will be eligible for the Best Poster Award. You need not contact conference organizers to be considered for the Best Poster Award.
If you wish to be considered for the New Investigator Award or the Post-Doctoral Award, you need to indicate it in the Abstract submission form.

Frequently Asked Questions
Code of Conduct
The Human Behavior and Evolution Society (HBES) is dedicated to providing a welcoming and respectful conference experience for everyone, regardless of personal characteristics such as: sex, gender, gender identity and expression, sexual orientation, disability, neurodiversity, physical appearance, body size, race/ethnicity, age, religion, nationality, marital/relationship status, pregnancy, lactation, parenting/caring responsibilities, socio-economic status, accent/dialect, and level of spoken English.
By registering for HBES 2026, attendees agree to the expectations and procedures set out below.
Expectations of Attendees
Respect and collaboration
Treat all participants, HBES staff, vendors, and venue personnel with courtesy and consideration. Be respectful and collaborative, critiquing ideas rather than individuals.
Awareness of power imbalances
Pay particular consideration to power imbalances created by social and academic hierarchies, which can make it easier for some attendees than others to advocate for their own interests. Postgraduate students, for example, may feel unable to challenge unacceptable behaviour from senior professors due to perceived risks to their career prospects. Be prepared to advocate for one another.
Respectful discourse
All debate and critical discussion should be respectful, avoiding unnecessary hostility, especially during question-and-answer sessions. Use non-judgemental language when discussing people and their behaviour — for example, "multiple sexual partners" rather than "promiscuous." Recognise that the connotations of certain terms may vary across languages and cultures, and respect those differences.
Responsible use of images
Pay particular attention to the use of images in presentations. Avoid unnecessarily sexualised images, images of study participants obtained without clear consent, and other exploitative imagery (e.g., humans touching wild animals). In some culturally sensitive cases, photographic images may not be appropriate at all.
Responsible communication of evolutionary science
Be aware of the potential for distorted interpretations of evolutionary theory to be used to reinforce racist, sexist, and other discriminatory beliefs. Consider how your work may be misunderstood or misappropriated by broader audiences.
Harassment
HBES does not tolerate harassment of conference participants in any form. Participants violating these rules may be sanctioned or expelled from the conference at the discretion of the conference organizers. Harassment can occur both on- and offline and includes, but is not limited to:
- Abuse, intimidation, or discrimination in any form
- Discriminatory verbal comments related to any of the personal characteristics listed above
- Behaviours that exclude other attendees from full participation based on those characteristics
- Sexualised images in public spaces
- Intimidation, stalking, or following
- Photography or video recording without consent
- Sharing of presentation materials without the presenter's consent
- Sustained disruption of talks or other events
- Inappropriate physical contact
Sexual harassment includes sexual advances, requests for sexual favours, and sexually directed remarks. Such conduct constitutes harassment when it (1) persists despite rejection, (2) is grossly inappropriate, or (3) is directed at a subordinate who might reasonably fear that their position would be jeopardised if the advances were rejected.
Venue and Site Rules
Attendees must respect the rules and policies of the meeting venue, hotels, and any HBES-contracted facility.
The conference campus is dry. Alcohol may not be brought onto or consumed on the conference grounds. Please plan accordingly and respect this policy throughout the event.
Reporting and the Grievance Procedure
Be mindful of your surroundings and of your fellow participants. If you need assistance, notice a dangerous situation, or see someone in distress, alert a member of the HBES grievance committee. The names and contact information of committee members are posted on the HBES 2026 conference website and on the main HBES website.
If an attendee believes they have experienced or witnessed harassment, discrimination, or bullying, they may:
- Contact a member of the grievance committee directly, in person at the conference or by email.
- Ask someone else to contact the committee on their behalf. The complainant's identity must be shared with the committee so that the complaint can be investigated.
- Bring a support person to any point in the proceedings. The accused may also bring a support person. The complainant and the accused will not be required to meet to discuss the incident.
Confidentiality and discretion are expected of all parties throughout the process.
Informal resolution
Attendees may seek assistance from the grievance committee without making a formal complaint. If the complainant wishes, committee members may attempt to resolve the dispute through informal mediation. This step does not involve a record of the encounter or sanctions by HBES.
Formal complaints
A formal complaint must be submitted in writing and will be investigated according to HBES procedure. The accused will be given the opportunity to respond to any formal complaint.
Sanctions
The grievance committee may offer advice, attempt mediation, and will report formal complaints to the HBES Executive Council. The Council may, at its discretion:
- Issue warnings
- Ask violators to leave the HBES meeting
- For serious or repeated violations, revoke membership in the Society
Grievance Committee
The current members of the HBES grievance committee are: Elizabeth Cashdan, Catherine Salmon, Jaimie Krems, Karthik Panchanathan, Nina Rodriguez, Michael Barlev, and Martin Daly. Their contact information is available on the main HBES website: https://www.hbes.com/grievance/ .
